The IO Cover

In this “Quick Looks” episode of Gear & Tactics, Mike Haytack introduces the IO Cover, One-handed, Built-in Lens Caps for Micro Optics.

Joe Chen brought us a sweet invention via an online platform and resource called Kickstarter. Kickstarter allows project creators to set a funding goal and deadline. If people like a project, they can pledge money to make it happen. Joe’s project is the IO Cover. The IO Cover housing is comprised of a durable thermoplastic polyurethane with built in lens covers for the Aimpoint micro optic. Joe’s vision is simple, and in this case, simplicity brings durability, usability, and affordability.

Over the past month, my interaction has been great with this product. I have to admit that at first glance I thought it could break during installation. My assumptions were soon subsided, I actually found it resilient, and the interaction was easy. A T-1 housing is already incredibly robust, so the main body of the IO Cover really acts as a support system for the flexible hinges. The plastic hinges are trained to quickly flip off with one hand and easily snap together. The cover is touted as being resistant to oil, fuel, solvents, temperature, abrasions, tears, cuts, and UV exposure. The material is also receptive to most spray paints and water dip coatings.

The story behind this product is inspirational, and the application is simple yet incredibly useful. The IO Cover comes in Black, FDE, OD Green and Foliage Green, and is available from TangoDown.
